Thermionic Valves

Millions of thermionic valves were made and used long before the pheonomen of the "Cat's Whisker" gave rise to the transistor and integrated industry that followed on.

A link (below) will take you to a short video that graphically shows how much work is involved in the making of a simple triode valve. Most of the process is very traditional, although the use of some modern technology is also evident. This is a most delightful "silent" French film with absorbing background music.

The glassblowing tradition was what brought the Dutch company Philips to electronics.
